Contraceptive Services

We offer a full range of contraceptive services including: the implant, Mirena (intrauterine system), copper coil (intrauterine device), injection, combined pill, progesterone only pill (mini pill), ring, patch, caps and diaphragms, condoms and fertility awareness.

If you currently have a Mirena coil, please note it can now be used as contraception or to help with heavy periods for up to 8 years instead of 5 years. If you are using the Mirena for contraception alone and it was fitted after the age of 45 this is effective up until menopause and can be removed aged 55. If you have a Mirena coil as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) this should still be changed after 5 years.

Cervical Screening (Smear) Tests

Cervical screening (smear) tests are offered to everyone who has a cervix and is between the ages of 25 and 65. Further information on this, including how often smears are offered, can be found on the NHS website. You can book an appointment for a smear test with one of our Nursing Team by completing an 'Administrative Queries' e consult or by contacting Reception.

We understand that you may feel apprehensive about having a smear test or that you may have questions or concerns. Please feel free to book an appointment with a practice nurse to discuss these.

STI testing

Did you know our Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) testing service is available for people over the age of 16 with no symptoms of infection, who live in the Borough of Bexley. For information on STI symptoms please visit: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) - NHS (www.nhs.uk)

Our simple home testing kits require either a urine or a vaginal swab sample and full instructions are included in the kit. If you would like to request an STI screening kit please submit an eConsult under the heading ‘General Advice’ or speak with a member of our Reception Team.

We will send you your results via SMS test message. You will be notified as soon as your results are ready, usually within 7 working days of us receiving your sample.

Bexley's Sexual Health Website is a one-stop website providing all Bexley residents with comprehensive information and advice on sexual health.

This includes advice on how to avoid contracting Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and how to access free testing for STIs, the Chlamydia screening programme, advice on contraception, free condom services, advice on how to avoid unintended or unwanted pregnancies and how to find your nearest confidential Sexual Health Clinic.

Bexley Contraception and Sexual Health Service (BSH) provide a confidential contraception and sexual health advice service to all Bexley residents. This is no longer a walk-in service. Patients can call 020 8301 8920 option 1 Monday to Friday 9:30am to 4:30pm to speak with a nurse who will give advice, or be able to book an appointment
