In the UK, liver cancer has surged in the last two decades, with over 6,000 new cases annually.

Types of Liver Cancer
There are 5 main types of cancer originating in the liver. The two most common types are:
Hepatocellular Carcinoma
HCC is the most common type of liver cancer and in England, the number of new HCC cases every year is around 2,400 in men and 600 in women.
Bile Duct Cancer
Around 2,800 people in England receive a bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma) diagnosis each year.
Symptoms and Risk Factors
Liver cancer doesn’t usually cause symptoms in the early stages. If symptoms appear, they may include:
- Unintended weight loss
- Fatigue
- Swelling in the abdomen
- Jaundice
- Abdominal pain
The biggest risk factor for the development of liver cancer is pre-existing liver disease.
The exact cause of liver cancer is unclear but there are factors that can increase your chance of developing liver cancer.
- Infection with a hepatitis virus
- Drinking alcohol
- Being overweight
- Having type 2 diabetes
